  • Dressing up and collecting candy is great fun, but how about starting a Halloween tradition that involves giving as well as taking! That way, your feeling of satisfaction won't disappear with your stash of candy corn. Below are some simple ways to make this Halloween more meaningful for your family - and for others in your community.

    Make a Difference...

These ideas can be easily woven into your current Halloween traditions.

  • Trick or treat for UNICEF. Visit any Toys"R"Us® or Babies"R"Us® store to pick up the familiar orange boxes. Click here to find a location near you.
  • Carving pumpkins? Create a few extras and donate them to a local nursing home.
  • Wear a costume that represents a cause you care about. For example, dressing as Captain Planet can enable you to deliver a quick environmental message to your neighbors.
  • Donate half your candy to a local homeless shelter or to our troops.
  • If you're hosting a Halloween party, ask guests to bring a can of food for your local food shelf.

    Talk About It...

Any holiday can become an occasion to give back. Talk to your family about the possibilities.

  • What do you like about Halloween? How could we share that fun with others who might not be able to celebrate?
  • What do you think about using holidays as an opportunity to make a difference in our community?
  • Can you think of ways we could do for others during other holidays or birthday celebrations?
  • Read About It ...

Jack the Bum and the Halloween Handout by Janet Shulman, illustrated by James Stevenson (William Morrow & Co. Library, 1997). A sweet story about a man who gives a surprising donation to UNICEF on Halloween. (No longer in print, but available at most libraries.)

"Imagine what our real neighborhoods would be like if each of us offered, as a matter of course, just one kind word to another person."

    --Fred Rogers
