Youth Artists Needed to Make Posters to Help Fight Hunger
Northwest Harvest
 
Date/Time: Posters can be dropped off at either location, Monday through Friday between 8am and 5pm
 
Location: Cherry Street Food Bank, 711 Cherry St, Seattle, or the Kent Warehouse, 22220 68th Ave South, Kent  

Northwest Harvest is a hunger-response network that provides food to more than 375 food banks, meal programs, and high need schools throughout Washington. Last year, we distributed more than 33 million pounds of food throughout this network. Creating artistic thank you posters for our Northwest Harvest volunteers is an on-going year-round project and posters are welcomed at any time. That said, Valentine's Day is an ideal opportunity to express gratitude to our fabulous volunteers!
Any words of appreciation are fine. Here are some examples:
  • Our volunteers are the best!
  • Thank you volunteers! 
  • Our volunteers are stars! 
  • Thank you for helping us fight hunger! 
  • Or feel free to create your own unique thank you message for our volunteers!
Posters can be as small as 2' x 2' or as large as 3' x 8'. How you want to orient the artwork on the paper is up to you - either vertically or horizontally is fine with us. Butcher paper is the best fit for us, but poster board works well too. Click here for more information and ideas.

Help Homeless Youth
YouthCare
 
Date/Time: Donations can be delivered Monday through Friday 9am - 5pm
 
Location: 2500 NE 54th St., Seattle  

It's hard for most of us to imagine carrying all of our belongings - from hygiene supplies to clothing and shoes - on our back. Homeless youth face this challenge on a daily basis. You and your family can help by donating backpacks and the supplies needed to fill them. Or you can help spread the word and raise awareness about the issue of youth homelessness by doing a drive for needed items, which is a great way to help youth get the items they need to get off the streets and prepare for life. This is also a great opportunity to start a conversation in your family and community about what it would feel like to be homeless (i.e. why are socks so important?) Your support makes a big difference. The most current and urgent needs are for:
  • Backpacks & messenger bags
  • New socks
  • Jeans & sneakers
  • Sleeping bags
  • First aid kits
  • New toiletries
  • Backpacks
  • Coats & jackets

Volunteer Work Party
Nature Consortium
 
Date/Time: Opportunities are available each Tuesday and Saturday throughout the year from 10am - 2pm
 
Location: Maps with location details are available online when you sign up, depending on which Tuesday or Saturday you choose for that week and that month.

Volunteers will participate in fun, hands-on conservation work led by Nature Consortium staff. Restoration work includes removing invasive plants, planting native species, and mulching new plantings, depending on the restoration progress in each site. Please dress appropriately with long pants, warm and dry layers, closed-toed shoes and rain gear as needed. Gloves, tools, a light granola bar snack (feel free to bring a lunch) and a jug of water will be provided. Please bring a refillable water bottle.

Ages: Children ages five and older are welcome if accompanied by an adult. A youth waiver form is REQUIRED for all youth under 18 before participating. Please bring a signed and completed form to Nature Consortium staff at the beginning of your first work party.

Supermarket Saturday Food Drives
FamilyWorks
 
Date/Time: Saturday, February 17, 9am to 1pm, in one-hour shifts
 
Location: Wallingford QFC, 1801 N 46th St, Seattle

The FamilyWorks Resource Center is a warm and inviting place where families and individuals are welcomed and encouraged to participate in programs and activities designed to support and enhance a nurturing and vibrant community. Supermarket Saturday food drives are a great opportunity to engage the community in conversations about how the food bank helps our community. Volunteers hand out flyers to shoppers that list the non-perishable goods needed for our food bank. Shoppers then purchase the items and donate them to us.

Ages: Families with children ages five and up are welcome to volunteer.
 
Time Commitment: One-hour shifts

Provide A Meal!
Accelerator YMCA
 
Date/Time: Monthly, preferably during the last week of the month. Food deliveries need to be made in the early evening.
 
Location: Contact for specific location

The Accelerator YMCA provides Transitional Housing for young adults (18-24) who are transitioning out of homelessness or foster care. We have eight locations all across King County. The location we need meals for is our Young Adults in Transition (YAIT) Program. YAIT is comprised of 19 studio apartments and is located inside of the Downtown Seattle YMCA. Meals should include both meat and vegetarian options, along with food labels (for allergies), and any specific instructions to be included. Meals should be large enough to feed 20 people. Since the meals need to be prepared remotely and then delivered, the food can be cold or hot upon arrival. However, the housing location is equipped with a full-sized kitchen, so we are able to reheat hot meals.

Write a Letter!

Operation Gratitude annually sends 200,000+ Care Packages filled with food, entertainment, hygiene, and handmade items, plus personal letters of appreciation to Veterans, First Responders, New Recruits, Wounded Heroes, their Care Givers, and to individually named U.S. service members deployed overseas and their families waiting at home. Of all the items included in these packages, the most cherished are the personal letters of appreciation! Our goal is to include several letters and colorful drawings in every Care Package and tell our troops "WE CARE!" Writing a letter is a meaningful way for Americans to show support for our Military. It only takes five minutes of your day, but will bring lasting joy to our troops. Letters are accepted year-round. Right now, we have a special need for those specifically written to our New Recruits, Veterans, and First Responders. Holiday cards need to be received two to three months prior to the holidays in order for them to reach our service members on time. Once we receive letters it takes us time to screen, sort and assemble them into our care packages and then we have to factor in the shipping time. If your letters will arrive at a later date it will work well to make them general letters of appreciation so that they may be used year-round. Don't know where to start? Follow these letter writing guidelines:
  • Start with a generic salutation, such as "Dear Hero" or "Dear Brave One."
  • Express your thanks for their selfless service.
  • Avoid politics completely and religion in excess; however, saying you will pray for them is wonderful.
  • Share a little about yourself: Family, Hobbies, Work, School, Pets, Travel, etc.
  • Talk about life and interests: Sports, Weather, Music, Movies, Food, Books, etc.
  • Adults: Include your contact information (mail or email) so the letter recipient can reply. (Recipients may or may not write back; please do not be disappointed if you do not receive a response.)
  • Children's Letters: Include first names only and do not include addresses (an adult's address can be used).
  • Can't find the words? Consider drawing or painting a picture instead; please add a note to kids' drawings with their age.
  • No glitter or confetti please!
  • Do not put your individual cards or letters in envelopes-they are not needed and create a burden for our letter screeners.

Car Window Poetry
Words Matter: Harness the Power of Poetry

At Doing Good Together, we know how the right turn of phrase can encourage more kindness. We know how a great book can cultivate empathy, opening a child up to the feelings and experiences of a stranger. The instructions for this project are as simple as its name.
  1. Create short, heart-warming poems, jokes, or artwork. You may want to use the free Car Window Poetry cards available here.
  2. Place your poems on car windows outside your school, playground, library, a busy grocery store, or wherever you happen to be. Note: if it's raining or remarkably windy, postpone this step a bit.
  3. Post your poems on Instagram with the #CarWindowPoetry. While you're at it, kindly add #DoingGoodTogether as well!

Let's take the lovely day called Valentine's Day and make it a month-long kindness endeavor! Prepare now by printing and posting our 28-Day Valentine Kindness Challenge. Pick and choose your favorite days for doing something extra good for others or challenge yourselves for the entire month of February. This is a great project for families, community or faith groups, or even classrooms. And if you participate in this challenge, kindly let us know how it goes!
