Our History
Minneapolis-based Doing Good Together (DGT) is a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization that inspires and equips people to raise compassionate and socially conscious children by volunteering with their siblings, parents and grandparents. DGT was incorporated in August 2003 by Jenny Friedman, Ph.D., author of The Busy Family’s Guide to Volunteering (Robins Lane Press, 2003), on the belief that when parents and grandparents engage with children in community service, they pass on the spirit of giving, strengthen their families, and breed a new generation of volunteers and philanthropists — making a powerful, positive impact in their communities, for now and for the future. Friedman, who has volunteered with her own three children for over 20 years and has worked with children and families as both clinician and a teacher, saw how few resources existed for families who wanted to provide children with a foundation of good citizenship, empathy and caring through family community service. Doing Good Together was established to fill that need. The organization received tax-exempt status in July 2004.
