Kinder Book Club: Duck for President

If you are looking for a fun way to bring the presidential election into your child’s life, pick up a copy of Doreen Cronin’s Duck for President.

Cronin is one of those rare and wonderful to discover authors who can make big ideas fun for kids even as she shares an inside joke with their parents! When the book opens, Duck is fed up with the injustices he sees around the farm and holds an election to replace Farmer Brown.

“Vote Duck,” reads his sign, “for a kinder, gentler farm.”

With his political career launched, Duck beats a quick path to the White House, discovering with each electoral victory that running a farm, a state, and finally a country is all very hard work.

As a parent, it’s hard not to giggle at the image of Duck’s opposing presidential candidate playing the saxophone, or at the speed with which Duck is disillusioned by his latest political goals.

It’s also impossible not to parrot this book with your kids forever after: at the end of each day, mom is covered in crayons, elmer’s glue, muck, mud, and coffee stains…. The phrase runs through my head almost daily.

Help your young child make sense of the next political season with this delightfully lighthearted and wickedly insightful book.
