Jenny Friedman, Ph.D., is founder and Executive Director of Doing Good Together. Author of more than 100 published articles on parenting issues, she combined her expertise in child development and education with her belief in the power of family volunteerism to write The Busy Family’s Guide to Volunteering, published by Robins Lane Press in 2003. The nonprofit organization Doing Good Together was an outgrowth of that book. After receiving her bachelor’s from Carleton College and doctorate from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., Friedman worked as a teacher and clinician. Her interest in family service began when her three children were small. She and a friend delivered meals twice monthly to the homebound with their kids in tow. At each house, one of their preschoolers went up to the door clutching a meal. The children felt important and the recipients were delighted to receive their noonday meal from a grinning 3-year-old. Since then, Friedman has continued to volunteer with her family because, like so many parents, she and her husband found that it sparked important conversations, built stronger family bonds, and added meaning and richness to their lives. Friedman also discovered that there was little information or support for parents who wanted to involve their families in community issues. She created Doing Good Together to fill that gap – to share her ideas, research and expertise with groups and individuals so that they, too, can enjoy the myriad benefits of family volunteerism.
