PLANT A ROW

How does your garden grow? If it thrives, pick a row and donate the bounty from that row to a friend or neighbor in need. If you’d like, attach a card saying, “From the garden of ___” or “Fresh to you! Enjoy!”  Your local food pantry or soup kitchen would probably love your harvest as well -- just call first to make sure they can accept your donation. With enough planning, you can plant the row with a variety you know will be particularly welcome.

Talk to your child:

  • Why is it important to eat fresh fruits and vegetables?
  • Why might it be difficult for those with limited resources to get fresh produce?

Book to share: The Vegetables We Eat by Gail Gibbons. Ages 5 and up. A simple, bright book to open up the world of vegetables to young children.
