Try a simple trick to help your child find calm in a busy day. Research shows that being mindful can reduce stress, improve memory, enhance empathy, and lessen anxiety and depression. Here’s a fun way to learn this important skill. Give each family member a raisin. Talk about what the raisin looks like (small, wrinkly, dark). How does it feel? Touch it to your tongue. Take one small bite. Talk about what you taste and feel at each step. As you slowly eat it, be aware of all your senses.

Talk to your child:

  • How did it feel to use all your senses and put so much focus on one raisin?

  • Did you enjoy eating more or less than usual?

  • Can you think of points during your day when it would help to step back and pay close attention to what you’re doing?
