National Night Out and the Power of Community
National Night Out is a yearly event that gives neighborhoods a chance to come together, strengthen local relationships with each other and law enforcement, and promote safer, more connected communities. There are events happening throughout Miami-Dade, as local municipalities and neighborhoods host family-friendly block parties and community events featuring food, games, and more.
National Night Out provides an important reminder that strong neighborhoods are built through trust, connection and shared responsibility. A conversation at a block party can lead to lasting friendships. A family learning about neighborhood resources can find support they did not know existed. Looking out for our neighbors keeps our communities healthy and strong. Knowing our neighbors makes our communities safer for all who live there.
Host a Mini Family Service Fair
Miami residents pride themselves on the cultural diversity each neighborhood has to offer. Put that pride on display by hosting a mini family service fair in your neighborhood in honor of National Night Out! Doing Good Together has created three community-centered projects perfect for any National Night Out celebration. Each of the three featured projects has been designed to inspire neighbors, young and old, to become ambassadors for good in their community.
Don’t have the time or energy to put on a full-fledged fair? Get to know your neighbors by hosting a community cleanup! Invite your neighbors to join you in picking up litter throughout the neighborhoods. You will get to know each other while making the neighborhood look its best!
Support Your Neighbors Through Volunteering
Another way to improve your community and make connections? Volunteer! Check out Doing Good Together’s curated list of volunteer opportunities in the Miami metro area to find something near you.
There are many community organizations in Miami-Dade working to build stronger communities. Health in the Hood is one place to volunteer to help provide sustainable and equal food access for all. Health in the Hood connects food-insecure communities to nutritious food and healthier lifestyles through urban vegetable gardens, food distribution, and wellness programs.
Miami-Dade County Parks offers many opportunities to get out into the parks and help keep them clean and safe for everyone to use. You may even see some neighbors at these fun events! Volunteers will help clean debris and trash from local parks and coastal areas. Find various opportunities to help throughout the year here!
National Night Out is a celebration, but it is also a call to action. It invites all of us to play a role in creating the kind of Miami we want to live in.
