Make Road Trips More Fun with Kindness Quests

Whether it’s a short trip to the beach, or a few days on the road to a national park, nearly 82 percent of Americans plan to travel this summer. And, according to travel experts at The Vacationer, most people will drive to their destination. Road trips can be stressful - lost items, a tense wait for a rest area, a missed reservation, or being asked how much longer the drive is for the thousandth time. However, it is all worth it once you reach your destination. And once you are back home, you will have so many fond memories.

Living in South Florida means having access to some of the most unique destinations in the country. Within just a few hours of Miami, travelers can experience tropical islands, wildlife preserves, cultural landmarks, and beautiful coastlines. Travelers also support local communities by stopping at small businesses, local restaurants, farmers markets, and roadside attractions along the way.

Read on for tips on how to make your family’s road trip even more meaningful this year!

Make the Time Fly with a Project

While a long road trip with small children can seem daunting, there are lots of ways to make the time go faster. One way? Pack Doing Good Together’s Kindness Fortune Teller in your travel bag. All you have to do is print, cut, and fold, and kids will have fun answering questions about kindness.  The quick acts of kindness and discussion questions are fun conversation-starters wherever you might find yourself. Whether or not you are traveling any time soon, this is a popular activity with children of all ages. Take it further by turning one thing from your discussions into an action item when you are home from your trip.

Looking for a way to pass the time in your car and spread a little kindness on your road trip? Make homemade cards! This activity can be done on the road or when you’ve stopped for the night. Decorate cards for a local hospital, nursing home, or veteran’s home. You could even reach out to a local children’s hospital and ask the staff if anyone in their care could use extra love and attention. When you get back home, check in with an organization like the South Florida Institute on Aging for more direction on where to send your handmade creations.

Read on the Road

Books are a must on any road trip. Even the youngest passengers will enjoy listening to stories or looking at pictures. Find books on a variety of topics related to kindness and other important issues on Doing Good Together’s website. After a quick trip to the library or your local independent bookstore, you will be ready to hit the road!

Road trips are about more than reaching a destination. They create opportunities for conversation, connection, and shared experiences. You have the opportunity to leave each place better than you found it by spreading kindness along the way.
